Recently, I was informed of a newly popular website called CollegeACB. On this website, anonymous writers will post gossip about specific people, groups, or other miscellaneous campus occurrences. After the initial post, other anonymous writers can contribute to the online slander with their own comments. With the anonymity prescribed by the Internet, people do not refrain from displaying their true thoughts, as there is no fear of exposure. Consequently, with this lack of censorship, people do not stop from writing extremely inappropriate and unkind comments.
This trend not only has the potential to offend people, but it also leads to a lot of misinformation. As anyone with Internet, which the majority of college students have, can go online and read these comments, there is no evidence supporting that what is discussed is true. This introduces a whole new way of inventing rumors, just what college students do not need.
Many of my peers and fellow students enjoy reading what CollegeACB has to say, finding entertainment in the ridiculous statements people post to this website. However, I believe that anonymous posts are what feed this website, and therefore, students should not even access this site. It is unbelievably inappropriate and inhumane for students or groups to be associated with false rumors, or be discussed publicly. The cruel students who post these things to CollegeACB are just provoking other students to follow. The only way to bring an end to their writing is to just simply stop reading.
I completely agree, I think that CollegeACB is completely inappropriate. The website does nothing but ruin reputations. Whenever I have looked at the website there have been nothing but negative things said about my peers. The website bashes every single sorority and fraternity. Topics such as “Hottest Freshman Girls” or “Boaz Hoes” are degrading. Even if someone says something positive, be sure that some will negatively respond in return. I think that there should be an end to CollegeACB. Lets stick to facebook people. The gossip is getting out of control.

ReplyDeleteI was also introduced to this website recently. While I have not actually written on the website, my friends and I are guilty of reading some of the comments. However, I agree that this website is only hurtful and does not have any positive aspects. These anonymous comments are things that people would never actually say to someone's face. Even if you are not affected by these cruel comments, you are only keeping the site alive for those that are. I think that this website will eventually shut down just like Juicy Campus!
ReplyDeleteI am appalled by College ACB and I actually wrote my first blog post about it as well! Many of my friends are on that site with completely false rumors written about them and they have no means of defending themselves, however, our hopes for them getting shut down are slim to none. Juicy Campus didn't get shut down, they just went broke and it wasn't due to a lack of traffic because I know many people used that website before College ACB came around. Here's the URL to the article I read about why Juicy Campus actually shut down : http://blogs.abcnews.com/campuschatter/2009/02/juicy-campus-is.html .
ReplyDeleteWe can, however, get our school's section taken off the website if we get someone from the administration to contact the website, which would at least close it down for the sake of our immediate friends and peers. It's awful to think that we would even have to do that because our peers should not even be using this site in the first place despite the fact that it's available.
Two points here:
ReplyDelete1. How come the first two comments are exactly the same, but from two different people? How can that happen?
2. How come nobody connected the topic with the course's theme? Doesn't Tapscott say that critics charge your generation with being mean and bullying and gossiping? Isn't this evidence that the anonymity of the Internet encourages rudeness? Lack of empathy?
